Chat with other developers one-on-one or in groups

Direct Messages

Direct Messages allow you to have private conversations with other developers. You can message users one-on-one or create group conversations with up to 6 participants.

Accessing Messages

  1. Click "Messages" in the navigation menu
  2. Or click the message icon next to a user's profile

Starting a Conversation

  1. Click "+ New Message" or "Start Conversation"
  2. Search for and select a user to message
  3. Or click the message icon on a user's profile
  4. Start typing your message

Creating Group Messages

  1. Start a new conversation
  2. Add multiple participants (up to 6 total including yourself)
  3. Give your group conversation a name
  4. Start messaging with the group

Message Features

Text Messages

  • Send text messages to individuals or groups
  • Use Markdown for formatting
  • Share links that automatically preview

Code Snippets

  • Share code snippets with syntax highlighting
  • Select language for proper highlighting
  • Others can copy and use your code

Read Receipts

  • See when your messages are delivered
  • Know when recipients have read your messages
  • Track message status in real-time

Typing Indicators

  • See when someone is typing a response
  • Know when to expect a message

Managing Conversations

  • Search: Search through your conversations
  • Archive: Archive conversations you don't need active
  • Delete: Delete conversations you no longer need
  • Mute: Mute notifications for specific conversations

Message Notifications

  • Receive notifications for new messages
  • See unread message counts
  • Get desktop notifications (if enabled)
  • Email notifications for important messages

Privacy Settings

Control who can message you:

  • Allow messages from anyone
  • Only allow messages from users you follow
  • Block specific users from messaging you

Best Practices

  • Be respectful and professional in messages
  • Use group messages for team discussions
  • Share code snippets when discussing technical topics
  • Respond in a timely manner
  • Use clear, concise language
  • Respect others' privacy settings

Message from Audio Rooms

You can also message participants directly from audio rooms:

  1. Open the participants panel in an audio room
  2. Click the message icon next to a participant
  3. Start a conversation with them

Message from Profiles

Message users from their profiles:

  1. Visit a user's profile
  2. Click the "Message" button
  3. Start your conversation
